Grammy Award Winning Musician, Lawrence Leathers, Murdered. His Girlfriend and Another Man Charged.

Grammy award winning Jazz drummer Lawrence Leathers was found dead in the stairwell of his apartment building yesterday afternoon. Leathers, 37, lived in the apartment with his girlfriend Lisa Harris, 41, and was said to have gotten into an argument with Harris and another man identified as Sterling Aguilar, 28, of Brooklyn.

According to reports Harris allegedly punched Leathers in the face and Aguilar put him into a "chokehold". During the scuffle Leathers lost consciousness and was later pronounced dead. Both Aguilar and Harris are charged with assault. Charges could be upgraded.

Leathers, originally of Michigan, won two Grammy Awards backing singer Cecile McLorin Salvant as a member of the Aaron Diehl Trio.

The entire Jazz community has been shaken by his death with his friends and colleagues writing heartfelt sentiments and condolences on Twitter.

Although Leathers will surely be missed, his music will live on.
