Alabama Man Allegedly Kills His Mother and His Own 3-Year-Old Son.

An Alabama man has allegedly done the unthinkable. On Sunday, Birmingham police arrested 31-year-old Desmond Burt Sr. for allegedly murdering his mother and his own son.

Police were called to a home at 4909 Hillman Drive Southwest to do a welfare check on the grandmother and young child. When officers made their way into the residence they found the woman and young child in the rear of the house and both, 62-year-old Cynthia Burt and 3-year-old Desmond Burt Jr., were dead.

During a news conference Tuesday, Birmingham Police Department Interim Chief Scott Thurman said Burt Sr. was at the home with other family members when his mother and son were found.

While authorities have not revealed how the boy and his grandmother were killed, Thurman said the bodies bore injuries that led detectives to immediately classify their killings as homicides.

Some of the wounds were consistent with blunt force trauma, he said.

Chief Thurman said Burt was questioned Sunday. When asked about Burt's mental state, Chief Thurman said he was unable to confirm if Burt Sr. has a mental disability.

At this time, there is no known motive for the murders and we are praying for the entire family. A GoFundMe has been organized to help raise funds for little Desmond's burial expenses.

Burt Sr. is being held at the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.
