Legendary and ground breaking actor Sidney Poitier has reportedly passed away.
The beloved actor death was confirmed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Fred Mitchell.
Bahamian-American actor Sidney was an Oscar-winning Hollywood star who was known as a true trail blazer in Hollywood with more than 50 films under his belt.
A Broadway play about the incredible career of the visionary actor was announced last month, before his sudden death.
The famed Bahamian actor was the youngest of seven children born to James and Evelyn Poitier. He began his career performing in the Bahamas and then migrated to the United States at the age of 15. At 16 he moved to New York to become a dishwasher but found a home with the American Negro Theater.
Poitier acted in the 1959 stage adaptation of "A Raisin in the Sun" which led to him being cast in the film as well. That role projected him into other roles such as "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" and "Lily's of the Field"
The first Black actor to be nominated for an Oscar, he was nominated for two other Academy Awards, ten Golden Globes nominations, two Primetime Emmy Awards nominations and six BAFTA nominations.
At the time of his death, he was one of two actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood that were still living, along with Sophia Loren.
Poitier was made an Honorary Knight in 1974 by Queen Elizabeth and was a humanitarian working for so many causes during his lifetime.
Poitier leaves behind six children. He was 94.
