Jesus Dropped the Charges! Mother and Son, Arrested for Murder, Both Walk Free.
Just a day ago we reported that a mother and her teen son had been arrested and charged with murdering a man who assaulted her. 35-year-old Carlishia Hood had gone into a neighborhood restaurant to order food when she got into a verbal altercation with Jeremy Brown, 32.
Brown became enraged with Hood and struck her, twice, in the face before her son, assumingely defending his mother, shot Brown. That horrible incident was caught on video.
Hood's son followed Brown into the parking lot and shot him again. Brown was transported to an area hospital where he later died.
The mother and son left the scene but did turn themselves in later. Hood, who was a valid FOID card and concealed carry license holder at the time of the incident, was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The duo were both charged with first degree murder but, after days of investigations, the charges have been dropped. Prosecutors say the charges failed to stick, in part, because Brown was the aggressor.
CBS News reports that "In a statement, Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx's office said the decision was "based upon our continued review and in light of emerging evidence."
"Based upon the facts, evidence, and the law we are unable to meet our burden of proof in the prosecution of these cases," Foxx's office added.
Hood had been ordered held on a $3 million bond after she was charged last week. Her son was charged as a juvenile and was being held without bail.
On Monday, Cook County prosecutors did not elaborate on what evidence led them to drop charges as Hood appeared in court at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
Some community activists had called for the charges to be dropped, saying Hood and her son were acting in self-defense after Brown punched Hood during a fight inside the restaurant.
Neither Hood nor her son had a previous criminal record.
