"Polite" 13-Year-Old Straight A Student Stabs His Mother to Death While She Slept with Her Newborn.

There was no warning, no indication and no advance warning on why 13-year-old Derek Rosa would have done an unthinkable crime but, he did.

911 operators in Hialeah, Florida said that they received a phone call shortly after 11:30pm Thursday night from the boy who was "so polite" and mannerable that they had a hard time believing him when he told them what he'd done. The teen told dispatchers he needed assistance and even answered their questions by saying "Yes Ma'am" and "No Ma'am".

When emergency crew members and police arrived, they found Rosa's 39-year-old mother, Irina Garcia, stabbed to death in her bed with a sleeping newborn just inches away.

Police said that there was no one home at the time of the incident except for Rosa, Garcia and the 14-day-old baby girl who is said to be Rosa's half sister. The infant's father, the stepfather of Rosa who is a truck driver, was out in northern Georgia at the time, police said. The Florida Department of Children and Families briefly took custody of the baby, but the maternal grandmother arrived and took care of her until the father could return.

The murder “left everybody dumbfounded,” Lt. Eddie Rodriguez said. He called it a “huge tragedy,” that left a Garcia’s mother without a daughter and Rosa’s biological father essentially without a son.

The lieutenant described Rosa as an 8th grader and honor roll student at iMater Charter Middle/High School. Friends and family described him as a “good kid” and a straight A student. The teenager had no history of mental health challenges; neither did his family. There were no fights, and he got along with both his stepfather and half-sister, Rodriguez said.
