"The Wonder Years" Reboot Gets Picked Up For a Full Season!
The 2021 revival of the late 80's show "The Wonder Years" has finally been picked up for a full season!
The melanated version of "The Wonder Years" debuted in late September as ABC’s strongest new comedy debut in two years in both total viewers (6.4 million) and adults 18-49 (1.9 rating) after seven days of multiplatform viewing. The show averages 4.8 million total viewers after seven days across all linear and digital platforms to tie The Conners as ABC’s No. 1 comedy this season among adults 18-49.
That says a lot for a show that has also ruffled quite a few feathers just by existing. There have been critics who have bashed the show because they feel like putting the focus on an African-American family, during an era when people of color were still struggling to be recognized as actual PEOPLE, somehow muddies the legacy of the original show. If you're not familiar with the original, here's the breakdown:
"An adult Kevin Arnold reminisces on his teenage years spent growing up during the late 60s and early 70s. As he goes from adolescence to adulthood, he experiences, along with his best friend Paul and sometimes-girlfriend Winnie, the full range of trials and traumas that come in just about everyone's life."
Now, here's the synopsis of the reboot:
" Set in the late 1960s and takes a nostalgic look at the Williams family, The Black middle-class family in Montgomery, AL, navigates life during the turbulent late 1960s. Dean Williams (Elisha “E.J.” Williams) is the 12-year-old at the center of the coming-of-age story, and Don Cheadle narrates as the voice of adult Dean."
The thing is, the shows are very similar in theme however, the reboot CAN'T be like the original because the Black experience in American is VERY different from their Caucasian counterparts.
We're glad the show is making its mark and also making its way into homes around the country, If you want to catch the show, it airs Wednesday nights at 8:30pm.
