Two People Found Dead in a Car with Toddlers in the Back Seat. Police Arrest Suspect.
A North Carolina couple was found shot to death in the front seat of their car while their children were left in the back seat. The Rocky Mount police say that the bodies of Devone Brown, 28, and Destiny Wiggins, 24, were found by Barnhill Construction employees who noticed the vehicle Thursday morning when they reported for work.
The two children in the back seat were rushed to UNC Nash Healthcare for treatment of exposure to the cold — temperatures in Rocky Mount dipped into the low 30s overnight that day. The toddlers were two of Wiggins’ four children. Rocky Mount Police Chief Robert Hassell said the girls were now with family members and “doing well.”
Police have arrested 42-year-old Eric Coley and charged him with the shooting deaths of both Brown and Wiggins. Coley has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. Investigators have not revealed what may have led up to the shooting.
A GoFundMe campaign has been started to help bury Wiggins and to take care of her children. At the time of this posting her family was halfway to their $10,000 goal.
Coley is being without bond.
